What is Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP)?

Ketamine, administered under professional guidance, has shown remarkable potential in unlocking deep-rooted emotions and facilitating breakthroughs in therapy. It has been particularly promising in addressing treatment-resistant depression, anxiety, and PTSD. By working on a neurochemical level, ketamine acts as a catalyst, accelerating the therapeutic process and creating opportunities for profound insights and healing.

When combined with art therapy, KAP takes on a holistic and multidimensional approach. Art therapy, with its expressive and symbolic nature, enhances the introspective journey, allowing individuals to access and process emotions that may be difficult to verbalize. Through artistic expression, clients can tap into their subconscious, gain clarity, and explore new perspectives.

The integration of KAP and art therapy fosters a synergistic relationship, where ketamine's unique properties deepen the therapeutic experience, and art serves as a powerful tool for self-discovery and self-expression. This combination offers a safe and supportive space for individuals to explore their inner landscapes, promote self-awareness, nurture emotional well-being, and cultivate personal growth.

As a mental health counselor and art therapist specializing in KAP, I am dedicated to guiding individuals through this transformative journey. With a personalized and compassionate approach, I provide a nurturing environment where you can embark on a path of healing, self-discovery, and empowerment.

Experience the profound benefits of Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy integrated with art therapy and unlock your potential for growth, resilience, and lasting change. Take the first step towards a brighter future today.

What is Ketamine?

Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic that was originally developed for medical purposes. It has been used for decades as an anesthetic agent in surgical procedures. In recent years, it has gained attention for its potential therapeutic applications, particularly in the field of mental health. Ketamine has been shown to improve symptoms related to depression and has mood-enhancing effects which usually last several weeks after treatment. A full course of treatment is between 3-6 ketamine sessions and some clients have reported lasting improvement after the treatment is complete.

What does Ketamine feel like?

Ketamine can induce a range of experiences. At lower doses, it may create a sense of relaxation, euphoria, and detachment from your body or surroundings. At higher doses, it can lead to more profound and psychedelic experiences, such as feeling disconnected from your body or having altered perceptions of time and space. It's important to note that the effects are temporary and wear off as the medication is metabolized by your body. A ketamine session last 2-3 hours long.

What can I expect from a KAP session?

Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy typically involves a series of therapeutic sessions guided by a trained healthcare professional. Here's what you might expect from a KAP session:

Initial Session: Before the ketamine dosing session, you'll have an initial assessment session with your therapist to discuss your goals, concerns, and medical history. This session allows for the therapist to assess if KAP sessions are right for you.

Preparation:  Before the dosing session you will meet with your therapist and they will explain the process, address any questions you have, and ensure you feel comfortable and informed. This session is 1 hour and together you and your therapist review aspects to prepare you for your KAP session. Some clients require multiple preparation sessions before their first KAP session.

Referral: The foundation of successful therapy lies in the relationship between you and your therapist. We prioritize building trust, comfort, and rapport, dedicating ample time to ensure a strong foundation. During our sessions, we will focus on acquiring skills to enhance your mental well-being, fostering increased self-awareness, and preparing you for your transformative psychedelic experience.

Once we both feel confident about introducing ketamine, the therapist will facilitate a referral to a qualified psychiatric prescriber who can assess your needs and prescribe the medication accordingly. You will be responsible to pick up the prescription from a specific pharmacy or get it mailed to your home.

Dosing Session: For the dosing session, we will schedule a 3-hour appointment, creating a safe and serene environment. We will begin by checking in, reviewing your intentions, and discussing your goals for the experience. Following the self-administration of the medication, in the form of a lozenge, it will take 5-15 minutes to feel the onset of the medicine and 15-45 minutes for the effects to fully manifest. During this time, you may gain a clearer and more compassionate perspective on your life.

Therapeutic Support: Throughout the session, the therapist will be there to provide guidance, support, help you process your emotions, ensure a sense of safety, and facilitate a debriefing of the experience afterward.. They may engage in talk therapy, mindfulness techniques, holding space, or other therapeutic approaches to help facilitate exploration and understanding of your experience. Ketamine can induce various subjective experiences, such as introspection, emotional release, or insights into personal challenges. Your therapist will help you navigate these experiences, creating a safe and non-judgmental space for processing and integrating your insights.

Follow-up and Integration Sessions: Integration is a vital part of the process. We will meet for at least one 1-hour integration session a few days after each dosing session. These sessions will allow us to explore the memories, thoughts, and insights that arose during the dosing session and discuss your experience, address any lingering questions or concerns, and explore how to incorporate the insights gained into your daily life. Integration sessions are required before moving on to the next dosing session. Once the treatment is complete individuals can plan for additional  monthly sessions to continue incorporating insights, learning coping techniques and processing impactful life experiences. KAP is intended to be a short term treatment and it is highly suggested to have a primary therapist in addition to your KAP therapist.

Duration of treatment: KAP treatment in total will require at the minimum one intake session, three preparation sessions, six 3-hour dosing sessions, and six 1-hour integration sessions. However, more preparation sessions and integration sessions are available based on the clients unique needs. Individuals can opt out of treatment at anytime. Once the initial treatment has been completed clients can schedule additional ongoing monthly dosing sessions.
